Christie's Story

Dec. 19, 2009-
Christie is a young rat terrier that was surrendered by a mill in Ohio on a very cold December day. She was being kept in a barn with her 2 pups and the temperature was dropping. Rescue had until nightfall to get her or she and her puppies would be `disposed`of.
She was held by a temporary foster home in Ohio and giving vetting which included spay, test for heart worm status, vaccinations and de-wormings. Christie was transported to Ontario by rescue transport and delivered to her foster mom. Her puppies were brought as well, placed in foster care and since adopted.
Christie arrived underweight, so frightened that she would run under the bed and not come out. We couldn`t catch her, let alone touch her to tell her that we were kind people wanting to help. She has never known a kind human touch. She was a dog to be bred, and when the miller decided he no longer wanted to house rat terriers, she and her babies had to leave. Will Christie learn to love life and humans? Will she come out from under the bed? Will she be able to act like other dogs? Only patience, love and kindness will help her. Puppymill dogs can and do learn to trust humans but may never be as socialized as a dog born into good circumstances. Some are able to achieve trust earlier and easier than others.
Stay tuned for the next installment of Christie's story.

Update Feb 25 2010
Christie is moving forward in her abilities to learn how to live in a house. This month saw her going out into the yard and exploring for the first time. She seems to really like it outside. What has suprised us is that she is almost housebroken because of her zooming out into the yard when the door is open. She still will not voluntarily come, or anything close to coming. You can pick her up but she remains stiff and scared. It is her wish to still not have human contact or touch. This will be a long struggle for Christie. The human hand has not been kind to her in the past. What she does have going for her is that her health is good and her coat is glistening now. Despite her terrors, she is a sweet, gentle soul.
